The Art of Szabries

Cover Artist, Fred Szabries

Visionary artist, Fred Szabries, is himself an artwork in progress ¾ creating and recreating himself in his artistic vision. From sign painter to art salesman to fine artist, at 33 Szabries is all energy, vision and imagination. He's fearless and he's irreverent, both qualities that serve him well in pushing the envelope of his own artistic vision. Using non-traditional materials with a strong grasp of the classics, Szabries has developed a method that is uniquely his. Painting professionally only since 1992, Szabries has transformed his work from traditional paint on canvas to works on aluminum and brass or combinations of industrial materials that include those metals with plexiglass, bolts, washers, stucco. Visions of Paradise, portrayed tropical birds, foliage and neo-classical architecture in a surrealistic style on canvas. Two of the paintings in this series were used on the permanent set of the television series, "The Golden Palace."

The next series, Art in Six Dimensions, appears to be Szabries first venture into the materials he uses today in such complexity that each work takes 26 separate steps to complete. In this series he combined such diverse materials as Lucite, plaster, paint and steel along with other metal alloys. Merging dynamic abstract elements with photo realism, Art in Six Dimensions expressed the artist's view of mankind in its present state of chaos.

Venturing into metaphysics with Day of Future Past, Szabries uses a bizarre form of "elegant surrealism" to "reach inside the viewer and pull from that person the experience, feelings and thoughts that are very personal and deep," says Aaron Fodiman of Tampa Bay Magazine.

If you're in the Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg, Florida area, you can see the work in person at: Studio Szabries Gallery, 2109 Central Avenue St. Petersburg Florida 33713. Or call him: 727.895.2444.
